What is Passive Ventilation?
Simply put, passive ventilation is a method of ensuring continuous and calculated airflow in a building. It allows unimpeded airflow above the thermal envelope to maintain efficiency.
Additionally, the primary objective is to eliminate condensation effectively. It achieves this by removing warm, moist air from roof voids and wall cavities. This process ensures a healthier and more durable building environment.
Why do we need to passively ventilate?
The increased focus on energy efficiency, heating, and insulation has resulted in tighter building construction. Consequently, these airtight buildings struggle to breathe and expel moisture effectively.
Moreover, moisture enters the building through various means but remains trapped without proper ventilation. If not expelled, this moisture can lead to harmful condensation.
Additionally, condensation buildup can damage the building’s materials and structure over time. It also creates an ideal environment for toxic moulds to grow, posing risks to occupants’ health. Proper ventilation is essential to prevent these issues.
Why is Passive Ventilation Essential for Every Roof?
We strongly recommend that every roof should include passive ventilation for optimal performance. This does not mean every roof will face internal moisture issues.
However, roofs without passive ventilation may experience moisture problems depending on various factors. These issues can compromise the building’s durability and health over time.
By adding passive ventilation to the roof space, you significantly reduce the risk of internal moisture. Additionally, it helps mitigate associated problems like condensation and mould growth. Passive ventilation is a simple yet effective solution for maintaining a healthy roof environment.
Why is Passive Ventilation More Cost-Effective Than Mechanical Systems?
When compared to mechanical systems, passive ventilation is a cost-effective and affordable solution for most buildings. It requires no ongoing running or maintenance costs after installation.
Additionally, the installation costs for passive ventilation vary based on the roof design. They also depend on the specific product combinations required for the project.
Overall, passive ventilation provides an economical alternative while ensuring effective airflow and reducing long-term expenses.
